Season Expectations

We are thrilled to have you as a member of the Odin family. Odin WPC takes pride in having fun while developing water polo athletes. In order to achieve both, we want to share with you some important information as you begin your water polo adventure.

Practices

Practices are three to four days each week and a schedule will be posted at the start of season. Although we try to maintain a consistent schedule, changes are sometimes needed and are posted to our BAND app. It is important to keep in mind that Odin contracts with the Grossmont Union High School and Cajon Valley School Districts to rent pools for our practices. This means sometimes school activities will take priority and we have to shift our practices. It also means we must be respectful of the pool areas and follow all posted rules.

Equipment Needed

  • Water polo ball – each player is expected to bring a water polo ball to practice. Balls can be found easily on Amazon or on the Kap7 website. Water polo balls are not required for tryouts. Please mark your athlete’s water polo ball with a permanent marker in multiple locations.

    • 10u/12u boys and girls: Size 3 (Kap7)
    • 14u boys, 14u/16u/18u girls: Size 4 (Kap7)
    • 16u/18u boys: Size 5 (Kap7)

Communication

While we expect all players to be at every practice, we know things come up. Please use the BAND app to notify your coach if your player can’t make a practice.

Player and Team Levels

Odin WPC is a competitive club. When we have enough athletes in a given age group we often split rosters into ‘Black’ and ‘White’ teams. Black teams ask for greater commitment and often compete at a higher level including more out of town tournaments. White teams are meant for players who are newer, need to develop their skills, or don’t want to commit as much time to the sport.

Athletes’ abilities are assessed and evaluated during the first week of each season. At the end the first week athletes are placed onto rosters. Rosters can fluctuate during a season depending on an athletes’ development and progression.

Age Groups

Athletes will participate in teams organized by age group and gender. Age is determined by the athlete’s age as of August 1st.

  • 10U-Splashball Coed
  • 12U
  • 14U
  • 16U
  • 18U

To understand what age group your athlete participates in please review our Age Group Chart and USA Water Polo’s age eligibility FAQs.

Tournaments

Tournaments are an exciting opportunity for teams to learn, as well as compete with other teams in the region. Tournaments are also a privilege. The Coaches select tournament rosters based on who is registered and paid 3-4 weeks prior to a local or regional tournament.

Payments

Our Club is a non-profit volunteer run operation. Your season registration fees help pay our coaches and pay for the pool rentals in addition to insurance and other necessary fees. Please pay your registration fees on time. If you need a scholarship, limited scholarship opportunities are available. Contact your team’s coach to learn more. Each tournament comes at a cost and registration fees are based on location. Tournament fees must be paid in advance for your player to be added to a roster.

Team Managers

Odin WPC has a volunteer role for each team called the Team Manager who partners with that team’s coach. They help coordinate and communicate important information with the players and parents regarding schedules, tournaments, team gear, and travel. We offer a season registration discount for volunteers who serve as Team Managers.
